CONFINED
Design Intention
Our design intention is to create an artwork that guides the viewer's attention using directional movement around a central reference point highlighting the element of space and the principle of Symmetrical balance. Hence our design language considered the relationship between the positions of different components in relation to the reference point.

Design Process
This project consist of 6 parts and take up 4 weeks to complete. We are required to complete approximately 2 stages a week and update our progress during tutorial classes that took place in the studio.
Week 1, we delegated 20 tattoo stamps among 7 members. We decided to implement the design element space and use of black and white colour to depict positive and negative space. Each tattoo stamp consist of inward movements moving towards a reference point either via lines or planes. The tattoo stamps have different shapes but they are designed according to the design intention. Then we strengthen the elements and principles when we proceed to part 2. We applied the transformation technique- rotation with retaining a centralized element within the tattoo stamp,
Week 2, as a conclusion of part 2, our design language is to relate components to a reference point, it has remained to compliment complexity and balance. Thus, in part 3,the chosen composition was centralized, Then, we chose design compositions such as 4 golden ratios to achieve balance and symmetry that developed a spiraling tunnel towards the central enclosed space. Different shades and shadows were used to create contrast and depth, while our thought process directed us to add and subtract basic shapes to create a complex shape that displays an enclosed space in the center. Then, we proceed to part 4 where we transform the geometrical stamps into 3D models while retaining dominant design principles.
Week 3,proceeding to part 4, all models consist of 1 similarity which is they are all centralized as the enclosure part is in the middle which is further emphasized by subtraction of planes in the middle and surrounding model pieces around the enclosure part, showing the contrast between enclosed space and the outer layers. By bringing forward the design principles from part 4, we proceed to part 5 and chose 1 model as a reference model for part 6. The model chosen has used framing concepts predominantly along with principles such as centralized and enclosure.
Week 4, for part 6, we decided to develop 3 final models that reflect different aspects of the word “enclosing”, namely “suffocation”, “caged”, and “encircled”. “Suffocation” was chosen as the main model as it embodies the sensation of being enclosed, thus amplifying the effect of the other two models, which depict methods of confinement. A presentation video is done for more detailed explanations on the entire Project 1- Confined.
