THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

This module is led by tutors, Ar Koh Jing Hao, Ar Nicholas Ng Khoon Wu and Ar Shahrianne Mohd Shah. It is conducted online throughout the entire semester.

Throughout this module, we will be exploring the history of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture in terms of architectural design, construction, space planning and building science and technology. We will be learning above aspects under three themes which is sustainability, tradition, globalization and modernization through theories and assignments. This module consist of 4 credit hours and lectures are given each week. Besides, quizez are provided as well to deepened our knowledge on what we have learnt each week.

MY PROJECTS

Project 1: Reading the Contexts of Traditional Streets

I will be conducting research on social, cultural and place context on the street I have chosen which is Jalan Tokong located in Malacca. This cultural street consist of old shophouses and I will be analyzing the intangible and tangible context of the street and explain it through a series of sketches.

In project 2, we are required to choose a type of vernacular or traditional architecture and create an A3 infographic poster to explain it under the theme building typology/ spatial layout construction or building construction, structures and materials. This project requires clear graphic organization to present information clearly to users,

OVERVIEW

This module was carry out online throughout the entire semester due to the the pandemic outbreak. A lecture video or live lecture will be carried out each week and tutorial tasks are also provided. I enjoy doing tutorials tasks right after lectures because it helped me to have a clearer understanding on topics that I have just learned. Since I was able to obtain the knowledge without forcefully memorizing it, I am able to face mid term and final examinations without being stressed out. The Times activities are also interesting as we will be able to obtain digital badges after completing the activities. Although this module was carried out online, I still enjoyed the learning process as I could study in a conducive environment with provided lectures.

My lecturers are Ar Shahrianne and Sir Koh Jing Hao while my tutor is Ar Nicholas Ng. I really appreciate their effort in guiding us throughout the module. My tutor is always friendly and extremely responsive to any questions asked regarding the module and provides clear briefings on each projects so that we have a clear goal on what we should achieve for our submissions. Besides, I am also grateful to my tutors whom guided us patiently during each tutorial session. Overall, I really appreciate the guidance from lecturers throughout the module.

OVERVIEW

Project 2: Research in Asian Architecture

In group of 7, we will be conducting a series of case studies to identify issues of the street we chosen in relation to commercialization and modernization. We will prepare research questions as well to narrow down the case study scope. Through this project, we will be able to understand how modernization results in the lost pf place and architecture identity of the street.
