ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN I
This module consist of 8 credit hours and is led by instructors Ar. Lim Wey Shan, Ar. Chang Yan Yee, Ar. Chong Sue May, Ms Delliya Mohd Zain, Ms Raihana Zainuddin and Mr Yoong Chern Li. Our tutor is Ar Chong Sue May.
Throughout the module, I have learned how to explain design by expressing 'self' perception through the construction and materiality in terms of tectonics. Besides, multiple studio-based projects in this preliminary design module also introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design that enhanced my knowledge about anthropometrics, ergonomics and intrapersonal space design.
MY PROJECTS
01
Geometry and Form: Expressions through Architectural Design Elements & Principles
[The Serial Geometric Tattoo Transformation]
In project 1, we worked as a group in creating geometric 2D artwork and transforming it into 3D form by implementing design element, principles and form transformation techniques that we are taught of during lectures. The architectural elements and principles of design are the foundation of the language to be used to express and explain our design.
02
Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration
[Isolation Structure]
In our second studio project, we were given the preference to use timber, rope, steel or tensile fabric to design an isolation structure that expresses our personal experience during the pandemic, We will gain an understanding on how materials, joinery and structural quality relates among each other along with the supporting material. Then, we are required to amalgamate design intention from Project 1 and use it in the tectonic while depicting anthropometry, ergonomics and banal action in the 5m³ structure.
03
Interpretation and Representation: Principles, Tectonics and Sensory
[Sensory Space]
We are required to identify a dominant theme by development from design intentions in Project 2. The dominant theme will ignite a sensorial experience for the user during this pandemic period through the spatial experience in the structure. A set of tattoo diagrams will depict the transition of concept from Project 2 to 3, main ideas of the design and ergonomic, anthropometry of the tectonic designed.
