BREAK FREE
Design Intention
The design intention of project 3 is to stimuli user’s 3 emotional stages Suffocated > Half freed > Break Free in the journey of the sensory space. 3 static position representing each emotions of each stages are to be completed with the help of structures within the space, The increasing amount of natural light source entering the space will lead user to ascending level of spaces. Users are able to experience above 3 stages of emotions by engaging themselves with the environment.
Tectonic Façade
Design Process
The time period for Project 3 is 4 weeks ending with a verbal presentation a day after the submission, I am required to design a 20m³ sensory space. Not only banal actions, a journey will be included in the sensory space too.
1st week, I carried out research on sensory space, I explored about how user emotional senses are related to the sensorial experience they go through when their are travelling and doing banal actions within the space. I also researched on connection between different materials such as concrete and timber.
2nd week, I refined my design intention from the 1st week and developed a design narrative extracting a dominant theme from the design intention in Project 2. Then I have decided to build a tectonic structure that express the journey of breaking free through sunlight and openings. The main material I have chosen is concrete while the supporting material will be plywood. I came out with 2 proposal, one travelling in linear while the other travelling upright. I have decided to integrate both proposals and started to settled down on my final design.
3rd week, I have done my final design and began my final model. The most dominant feature of my tectonic design are the protruded windows that allow sunlight to enter in order to enhance user's sensorial experience. It also plays a role of leading the user towards the exit which is an opened area at the highest point of the tectonic structure.
4th week, after completing my final model, I started working on my orthographic drawings. The orthographic drawings included plan view, 2 elevations, 1 section and an exploded axonometric drawing, For Project 3, I am also required to do 2 A4 architectural abstract drawings that showcase sensorial experience, 4 A6 tattoo diagrams: 1 depicting transition in concept from Project 2 to Project 3, 2 depicting main ideas of my design and 1 showing anthropometry and ergonomics.
